Anderlecht lost their first match in the Europa League on Thursday against Zenit St Petersburg. The Brussels' team suffered a heavy 1-3 defeat. At half time, the game was already played with a 0-3 on the scoreboard.

Zenit proved to be better from the start. After just 8 minutes Kerzjakov opened the score after a mistake of Bernardez in the defence. Anderlecht had the opportunity to equalise, but Boussoufa's effort hit Gillet on the back. On the other side, the Russians kept creating chances. After missing two open opportunties, Kerzjakov doubled the lead with a shot that went in via the post. That same Kerzjakov even scored a hattrick with a nice effort from distance: 0-3.

After the break, Anderlecht showed more initiative thanks to Legear who had replaced Rnic. The Mauves created several good chances, but could only score one goal. On a corner kick, Juhasz headed the ball in the net. Zenit didn't have any big chances anymore and the home side wasted their opportunities to score more. Final result: 1-3
