Anderlecht easily defeated AEK Athens yesterday in the first match of the Europa League. The Mauves won 4-1 and take the lead. In the other game, Lokomotiv Moscow beat Sturm Graz with 1-2.

AEK and Anderlecht initially held each other in balance. The best chance in the opening minutes was for the Greek, but Proto saved well.

Within the first 15 minutes, Anderlecht opened the score. Suarez broke through the visiting defence and was pulled down in the box. While lying on the ground, he managed to kick the ball and score: 1-0.

Anderlecht now took control and created multiple chances. Jovanovic scored after half an hour of play, with a header. The visitors were lucky the scoreline was only 2-0 at that time.

Not much later, a defensive mistake allowed one of the Athens' strikers to break through and curl the ball around Proto into the goal (via the post).

Suarez took away all doubt before the break. He lifted the ball over the defence, took control of it again, dribbled into the box and placed it in the upper corner: 3-1.

The second half was less good. Anderlecht simply controlled and forgot to score more goals. Eventually Suarez lifted the ball over the Greek goalie, completing his hattrick and placing the 4-1 result on the scoreboard.
