Anderlecht returned from AZ Alkmaar empty handed. The Mauves suffered a 1-0 defeat and can be happy with that. AZ showed to be better than Anderlecht in this game and forgot to score more goals.

After just a few minutes, the home side already had a serious chance, but Holman missed. Anderlecht reacted with a breakout of Mbokani but the action was stopped by the referee because of a foul of Jovanovic.

Anderlecht had problems with the pace and tried to keep a good organisation. But AZ's wingers game the Belgian defence a hard time. Benschop, Beerens and Holman missed several chances, but eventually Maher scored. Anderlecht didn't crack completely though and managed to reach half time trailing one goal.

The second half brought more of the same. The Mauves coudn't create chances and AZ forgot to finish theirs. Wasilewski had a dramatic evening while Deschacht, who replaced the injured Safari didn't do much better.

Out of nowhere, Gillet almost equalised, but his header was stopped by Esteban. The score remained unchanged, leaving still hope for the return on Thursday in Brussels...
