Anderlecht did not get what they deserved: at least one point in Zenit. The Mauves were the better side yesterday evening, but were unable to score. Zenit did just that, on a penalty... Final result: 1-0.

Zenit grabbed Anderlecht by the throat in the first minutes, but the visiting defence had no trouble keeping the nill. The Belgians already deserved a lead after just 15 minutes. Kanu aimed over the crossbar and Jovanovic, alone in front of Malafejev, missed the target. After 30 minutes, Gillet appeared in the box but he made the wrong choice.

Zenit gave a weak impression. Their strikers were constantly caught offside. The only danger came from quick free kicks. And it was on such a free kick that they scored in the second half. While the Anderlecht players were still organising, Zenit quickly took the free kick which placed Anjoekov alone in front of Proto. Jovanovic pulled him down in the box: penalty and 1-0.

Anderlecht deserved at least one goal though. Jovanovic broke through the home defence and was brought down in the box: no penalty, judged the referee. A bit later, Iakovenko was pulled down: again no penalty. Kanu was just a centimeter too short to score the equaliser. And in the last second, De Sutter deviated a centre of Molins just next to the post.

Anderlecht are now last in their group with just one point. Though Zenit and AC Milan are still within reach. In the next two home games, the Mauves need to score and win...
