FLASHBACK In 1963, Anderlecht was on its way to becoming a European subtop team, and the gap in quality with Club Brugge was very clear. Club Brugge, on the other hand, had only recently been promoted back to the top division. Club Brugge therefore suffered a heavy defeat: Puis scored twice, while Janssens, Hanon, and Van Himst added the rest: 0-5!
At the end of that season, Anderlecht crowned themselves undisputed national champions, securing their tenth title.
For Club Brugge, it was a difficult year: coach Juan Schwanner was dismissed midway through the season, and the team finished only twelfth, just above the relegation zone.
The 1963-1964 season also went down in history because of a bribery scandal involving FC Turnhout. Following a complaint from Beringen, it was revealed that Turnhout's chairman had approached the Limburg goalkeeper to fix a match in exchange for money. The football association took strong action: Turnhout was sentenced to relegation to the second division, while Beringen was awarded a forfeit victory and thus finished second, just ahead of Standard.
