Several players took some time to reflect on Frank Vercauteren's dismissal yesterday. The general theme is one of disappointment. Olivier Deschacht went as far as to call it "the darkest day" of his career.
"I feel guilty," said the left-back. "I played a terrible match last Sunday - one of the worst games in my career - and a day later the coach is dismissed. Of course I'm disappointed. Vercauteren is the coach who formed me as a youth."
Jonathan Legear was similarly grateful to have been working under Vercauteren. "He is the one who launched my career, I'll forever be grateful for it. But the last months his vision did not agree with the style of the club. We knew that he would not finish the season," said the young winger.
Boussoufa was surprised at the board's decision. "I saw Vercauteren just last Monday. Things would be better with another coach, he said. Only later that day I realised what he meant. I had a great time playing under his supervision, he's a real professional."
