OTHER The financial situation of Anderlecht became known earlier than expected. The situation also appears to be more serious than expected, although not everyone will probably be surprised by the situation.

Anderlecht would have recorded an accounting loss of € 27 million in the year 2018-2019. That would be about twenty million more than a year ago. This large loss has to do with various elements.

First of all, Anderlecht has no fewer than forty players under contract, many of whom are loaned players with little or no future at Purple & White. Many of these loaned players can be categorized as failed (think of Sanneh, Milic, Vranjes, etc.) and the question is whether these players will still yield a lot when they can possibly be sold in the future.

Secondly, in recent months many members of the staff have been recruited and also fired, so that high dismissal premiums had to be paid regularly. Weiler, Devroe, Rutten, Vanhaezebrouck and Arnesen, among others, received (or receive) a lot of money after their departure from Purple & White.

Thirdly, Anderlecht only played Europa League last year and it was eliminated before New Year for the first time. Missing the Champions League money was compensated by the transfer money from Dendoncker (almost 15 million euros).

Anderlecht have lived above their means in the last seasons and this summer an enormous effort has been made to get players like Kompany, Nasri, Vlap and Chadli. It does not look like this situation will change soon. After all, a money increase has recently been approved and getting in the Champions League seems like a fairytale rather than reality. A consolation prize is that the transfer from Bornauw to FC Köln still has to be booked next year.
