"Verschaeren has a rare quality"

INTERVIEWS Last Tuesday there was quite a commotion because Roberto Martinez selected Yari Verschaeren with teh Red Devils. The midfielder does not play at Anderlecht. In Het Laatste Nieuws he explains why he still called Verschaeren. "he is there based on the previous stages." Martinez thinks Anderlecht should take the pressure off Verschaeren.

"The club made the mistake of believing that Verschaeren would win games on his own. He is 18 years old, that is not possible. That pressure has not helped him in his development. Anderlecht have to lower expectations and give him minutes back. That way he gains confidence."

Verschaeren collected barely twelve playing minutes in the first four games. Vlap, Zulj and the day before yesterday Tau were always preferred as number ten. National coach Martinez does not drop his poulain. "Yari has a rare quality in modern football, he can turn the ball with his back to the goal at the foot with both the left and the right", Martinez tells Het Laatste NIeuws. For that reason, Verschaeren should always play centrally and not from the flank.

Martinez will talk to Verschaeren in the coming days. He continues to believe in him. "I don't know many players of that age with such a personality on the field," said Martinez. "The fact that Yari is present now is based on the previous stages. But if he stays on the bench, there is indeed a proble."
