OTHER Anderlecht's second goal in Ostend should not have been awarded. VAR should have intervened for Islam Slimani's offside earlier in the phase. So reports the Professional Refereeing Department.

Footage Friday clearly showed Slimani was a foot offside. Yet referees and VAR allowed play to continue and approved Anderlecht's subsequent goal.

"After Slimani plays the ball, Ostend player Pierre Dwomoh touches the ball and it goes towards the middle of the pitch," the analysis by the Professional Refereeing Department begins. Perhaps it is for this reason that neither the referee nor VAR intervened.

Unjustified, it now sounds. "The Ostend player has no controlled possession of the ball," said the Professional Refereeing Department. "He does not intentionally touch or play the ball. The attacking team (Anderlecht, ed.) immediately regained possession of the ball and continued to attack. So one cannot speak of a new attack."

"Therefore," it concluded, "the goal had to be disallowed for offside."
