INTERVIEWS After the match, coach and players of Real Sociedad reacted in dismay to the misbehavior of part of the Anderlecht starting lineup. Anderlecht spokesman Mathias Declercq condemned the facts and apologized on behalf of the club. “This totally unacceptable behavior has no place in soccer,” he said.
What exactly happened, Declercq did not know at the time of the post-match press conference. “For that we have to wait for UEFA's report,” he said. “There were as many as eight arrests. We want to condemn this as a club without equivocation. We apologize to Sociedad and its supporters.”
Anderlecht assumes UEFA will impose sanctions on the club. “After incidents two years ago against West Ham, we still have a suspended penalty outstanding,” Declercq said. “Possibly UEFA will activate it. Then we will have to play an away game without supporters. Knowing that makes all this even more incomprehensible.”
Declercq also announced Anderlecht's own intention to act. “We as a club will also take measures against the culprits.”
