Embarrassing loss in Beerschot

Anderlecht made a serious fool of themselves by losing 2-1 at Beerschot which barely counted two points so far. Anderlecht did have most of the goal attempts, but ran on a counter before and after halftime in which very poor defense. It is typical that Dolberg provided the equalizer from a penalty kick after halftime, because Purple-White did not really get any clear-cut chances after halftime. A very painful defeat that could lead to a free fall in the standings, especially with the away game to Club Brugge coming up.

 

 



Anderlecht started well, but purveyed too few real chances from a number of corner kicks, among others. Dendoncker headed centrally at goal after a free kick. After twenty minutes, Anderlecht showed their first vulnerability on the counter. Verlinden kicked hard against the post from long range, the rebound went over. Then Anderlecht got a double chance through Zanka and Dendoncker, but they were not converted into a goal.

On the next counter, Ah-Sahafi kicked Beerschot into the lead with the home team's only ball between the frame before halftime. The young striker was given too much space by Zanka and even when he shot at goal, he was not hindered. Coosemans was knocked into the short corner. The goal obviously instilled confidence in the home team. Anderlecht pressed again, but only managed a few half-attempts.

Immediately after halftime, Purple-White received a gift from Beerschot.

Dagba pulled Stroeykens down on a cross and Dolberg converted the first penalty for Anderlecht. Anderlecht kept pressing, but again only got to a few half chances in the next quarter of an hour. Anderlecht again allowed itself to be caught out in a childish way. It let Beerschot get back into the game for a while and on a counter - Leoni just had to make a professional mistake here - things went thoroughly wrong again. With some luck (or poor defending) the ball landed at the feet of Al-Sahafi who made his second of the evening.

Hubert brought in Dreyer, Amuzu and Vazquez, but no real chances resulted from that now either outside of a shot by Dreyer and some useless runs by Amuzu. Like a wounded animal, Anderlecht dragged itself to the closing stages where it tried with the courage of despair to get another chance, but even that was no longer possible.

Thus Anderlecht suffers very costly points loss at Beerschot and with a trip to Club Brugge ahead, a free fall in the standings is not entirely unthinkable. Or will the gentlemen step onto the field next weekend in Bruges with concentration?
