Winter transfers only possible from Jan. 7

TRANSFERS Don't expect any winter transfers for Anderlecht on January 1 or 2 yet. In Belgium, the transfer market will not open until Tuesday, Jan. 7. It closes again exactly four weeks later, on Monday, Feb. 3 at 11:59 p.m.


FIFA regulations allow sixteen weeks of transfer activity each year. Each country chooses separately when it falls. Last summer, Belgium chose a mercato that lasted 12 weeks, a bit longer than in most surrounding countries. So that leaves four weeks for this winter.

The Belgian clubs felt it was important to have the winter mercato end at the same time as most surrounding countries. That end date is Feb. 3. Add up the maximum of four weeks and you end up with January 7.

Anderlecht plays its first match after the (ultra-short) winter break on January 9. That is the quarter final of the Belgian Cup against Beerschot. Three days later follows the first league match of 2025. Then Club Bruges will be the opponent.
