INTERVIEWS Anderlecht coach David Hubert experienced the match against Fenerbahçe with mixed feelings. He saw Anderlecht start with a positive attitude, yet following a quick deficit. Hubert emphasized that his players did not give up, despite that early setback. “The team showed resilience and courage, which resulted in a comeback and even a lead,” he said.

“A bright spot was also the return of Jan Vertonghen, but unfortunately, like Anderlecht, Jan will not continue to play in the Europa League. However, there were chances to get further on the European stage.”

And Jan Vertonghen himself was also delighted with his return. The RSC Anderlecht captain was pleased that his comeback took place at home, although he had initially wanted to return earlier. After the match, Vertonghen felt good, but he acknowledged that there is still physical work to be done.

His recovery has taken longer than expected due to a new injury that delayed his return. “After six months of rehabilitation, I finally see the end of the tunnel. The busy playing days have made it difficult to train in a full team setting, which is essential for improving my fitness,” he echoed. However, Vertonghen now has the chance to further optimize his physical state; the mid-week games are over.

An enthusiastic Vertonghen also believed in a good outcome yesterday: “Especially when the score was 2-1. However, a poorly defended standard situation changed the outcome of the match. “We really need to do better in such situations,” he concluded.
