Vertonghen: “It will take a while to process this”

GAMES Jan Vertonghen was the first to speak to the press after the cup final. The captain could not hide his disappointment. “When you play against this Club Brugge, everything has to be perfect,” he stated. “We worked so hard towards this. This is very disappointing.”
“We are very disappointed. We knew that everything had to be right if we wanted to have a chance against this Club Brugge. They were favorites beforehand for a reason. If then everything is not perfect, you lose this match. Our first goal fell too late. The moment I went in, just after that we had a big chance with that scramble in front of goal. If that goes in, it will be 2-1 twenty minutes earlier. On the other hand, it could have been 3-0 just before.”

Continue reading How disappointed is Vertonghen? “We worked towards this. Me too, I did everything to come back. We looked forward to this hard, put everything into it. Then this is super disappointing. It will take a while for everyone to recover from this. Especially since fourth place in the league is as good as certain. Maybe we can still look up, but it will take a while for this to be processed.”
Vertonghen ended up playing about 25 minutes. What was he hoping for when he filled in? “I wanted to bring energy. Also believe it is still possible. Also directness, some more crosses. There were just too few of those in recent months. We made wrong decisions in front of goal too often. I tried to bring that awareness. I hope it's luck, but it wasn't enough.”
Now three league matches remain. What are the ambitions left there? “Now we can show what we are worth. It's against the best three teams of the moment. Let's show that we are Anderlecht-worthy, especially in those two home matches.”
