INTERVIEWS Nilson Angulo has been the standout player in the first two games of the season. Since Besnik Hasi's arrival, the young Ecuadorian has been increasingly coming to the fore. Will this be the season of his big breakthrough? “Since I've been here, Nilson has made a lot of progress,” says coach Hasi.
It was one of Hasi's most notable decisions after his arrival in March: Angulo started no fewer than eight times during the playoffs. “Before I arrived, he wasn't a regular starter. With me, he became one, but he was in a position where he also had to do a lot of defensive work,” says Hasi about last season. “He did that very well, but it meant fewer goals and assists.”

Continue reading In early June, Angulo excelled in two international matches with Ecuador. Against Brazil, among others, he dazzled his opponents with his dribbling skills. He now seems to be continuing that form at Anderlecht. “Nilson has made a lot of progress. He now feels like a regular player. He had some transfer issues, but now everything is fine in his head. I hope it stays that way. I have many conversations with him,” said Hasi.
Angulo played 62 minutes against Häcken and 77 minutes against Westerlo. There is a reason why Hasi took his star player off early twice. "Don't forget that he joined the team late because he was still playing international matches and had a minor injury. As a result, he has only been training for two weeks. Playing 90 minutes is still difficult for him at the moment."
In any case, Hasi thinks very highly of Angulo. “I hope he can make progress this season in terms of goals and assists. If he succeeds, he can become a very important player for us.”
