INTERVIEWS Leander Dendoncker (30) currently lives and plays football in Spain for Real Oviedo, but in an interview, he also reflects extensively on his time at Anderlecht.
After seven years in England, the Red Devil returned to the purple and white in 2023. "It was nice to be closer to family again," he says. "But it was difficult from a sporting perspective. I returned to the team I love, the club that gave me every opportunity. I wanted to make it a positive story, but that didn't work out. Of course, that's a disappointment."
Dendoncker realizes that expectations were high. Some supporters accused me of being disinterested, and that hurt. But I always gave it my all. If I didn't smile, it was out of frustration, not because I didn't care. People who really know me know that.
Yet, he doesn't want to dwell on disappointments. "For me, Anderlecht is a closed chapter. I'm not going to kick them. But Anderlecht will always be special to me. Besides my family, that club has been the most important thing in my life, and it will remain that way."
