OTHER Besnik Hasi succeeded David Hubert as coach of RSC Anderlecht at the end of last season, with mixed success. Last season, he failed to win the cup final and also missed out on a top three finish in Play-Off 1. He was nevertheless allowed to stay on as coach of the purple and white this season, but due to eliminations from both the Europa League and the Conference League, a large portion of the supporters seem to be losing faith in Hasi. This feeling was further reinforced after the disappointing matches against Zulte Waregem, Antwerp, and OH Leuven.
The numbers are equally unconvincing. In 26 matches with Anderlecht, Hasi averaged 1.27 points per match. This puts him ahead of Simon Davies, who only managed 0.60 points per game in 2019, but he lags behind all other Anderlecht coaches in recent years, such as Felice Mazzù and David Hubert. Remarkably, his average at KV Mechelen, 1.45 points per game, was even higher than his current average at Anderlecht.
Anderlecht plays a crucial match against Standard Liège on Sunday. A win would put the purple and white closer to Union and Club Brugge, who face each other at the Jan Breydel Stadium. But a loss threatens to send Anderlecht into freefall in the standings: Gent and Sint-Truiden trail by just one point, while Zulte Waregem and Charleroi are also close behind.
The question therefore arises: is this match one of Besnik Hasi's last chances at Anderlecht?
