OTHER The Dutchman Paul Simonis, like Maarten Martens, is in the running to become Anderlecht's new coach, Het Nieuwsblad has learned. According to the paper, a positive conversation took place. Several other coaches are also under consideration. The 40-year-old Simonis worked as a youth coach at Sparta (2005–2020) and as an assistant at Go Ahead Eagles (2020–2022) and Heerenveen (2022–2024), before becoming head coach of Go Ahead Eagles in the summer of 2024.
Simonis led the Deventer club to an impressive seventh place and victory in the KNVB Cup. One of his protégés was Enric Llansana. That top season earned Simonis a move to Wolfsburg. It proved unsuccessful, and he was sacked after just ten matchdays. Shortly afterwards he was linked with Ajax as a possible replacement for the dismissed John Heitinga. According to Dutch media, Simonis is also talking with Twente, AZ and Utrecht, but those discussions are more with an eye on next season.
