OTHER Jean Kindermans stands at a turning point in his career: a return to RSC Anderlecht appears closer than ever. Last week there were talks between the purple-and-white club leadership and Antwerp's current head of youth, during which the broad outlines of a possible comeback were discussed. Kindermans is still regarded as the architect of Anderlecht's successful youth academy — news that, among others, Romelu Lukaku would no doubt welcome. The recent change of power at the club, with Wouter Vandenhaute replaced by Jesper Fredberg and Tim Borguet, has cleared the way for a potential return.

Insiders say the two parties sat down at length last week. Three years ago Kindermans was shown the door at Neerpede under Vandenhaute's chairmanship, a decision that at the time met with incomprehension among supporters and former players. For nearly two decades Kindermans put his stamp on Anderlecht's youth training.

Under his leadership numerous top talents — including Vincent Kompany, Anthony Vanden Borre, Romelu Lukaku, Youri Tielemans, Dennis Praet, Leander Dendoncker, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Jérémy Doku and Zeno Debast — made the step up to the first team. Contractual obstacle After Anderlecht's financial restructuring Kindermans had to leave and found a new home at Antwerp, where he is contracted until June 2029. Any return to the Lotto Park would therefore involve a buyout. Talks are ongoing, but no agreement has been reached yet. On Thursday evening Antwerp and Anderlecht will face off in the Belgian Cup semi-final.
