The call came while he was abroad

OTHER Olivier Renard is no longer sports director of RSC Anderlecht. On Sunday evening, after the 2-0 defeat against RC Genk, he received the news by phone while he was abroad on private business. The club chose to act quickly, even though Renard had known for some time that his position was shaky.

Renard is blamed for many things: the continuing sporting malaise and disappointing winter transfers. He had actually been a target for the supporters for much longer. The mounting tensions, also within the club, ultimately led to his dismissal.

Renard's tenure began in October 2024, when he was brought in by then-chairman Wouter Vandenhaute after Jesper Fredberg's dismissal. His appointment immediately met with resistance from the supporters, and there were also regular internal clashes. A number of outgoing transfers brought in a tidy sum, but the incoming transfers almost all fell short of expectations and created a new sporting slump. With Vandenhaute stepping down as chairman, the way was clear to thank Renard as well.
