INTERVIEWS Antoine Sibierski spoke to the press this afternoon for the first time in his capacity as Anderlecht's sporting director. “My ambitions fully match those of the club,” said the 51-year-old Frenchman. He declined to comment on the current coach and the squad for now. Sibierski outlined his vision for Anderlecht: “We want to play dominant football, both on and off the ball.

I want all our teams to show an impeccable mentality, with values such as structure, discipline and work ethic. And I want to see youth players progress into the first team.” The assembled media also asked Sibierski about current coach Jérémy Taravel and the playing group. “At the moment I am still observing. It would be inappropriate, and simply wrong, to draw conclusions now,” he replied. He noted the club still has several important matches ahead and said he does not want to create unrest during this period.

“This will be an important time for the club. We are therefore focusing primarily on the upcoming matches.” At his press briefing Sibierski made clear he knows the club's history. He recalled how, as a young boy growing up near Lille, he often watched Anderlecht on RTBF. “At five or six I watched Anderlecht's European matches in black and white.

For me, Anderlecht has always been the club in Belgium. Players who immediately come to mind are Scifo, Vercauteren, Albert, Degryse, Nilis. And of course Paul Van Himst, who is of my father's generation. Yesterday, on my first day, I asked to meet Van Himst because he is the personification of what RSC Anderlecht is.”

Sibierski stressed that it is important the current generation of players and the coach recognise the club's illustrious past. “It is the responsibility of everyone within the club to ensure that history is not lost. Board members, staff, players — after all, we are only passing through the club. But above all, let's make it a fine chapter.”
