
INTERVIEWS The heavy defeat of Royale Union Saint-Gilloise against Club Brugge KV also provoked reactions from Silvio Proto. The former Anderlecht icon didn't mince his words on a French-language sports podcast and responded sharply to the increasing comparisons between Union and R.S.C. Anderlecht. Proto conceded that Club Brugge is currently the dominant team in Belgium, but he added important nuance to that supremacy.
The ex-goalkeeper pointed out that Club also endured a long spell without a league title. He stressed that Anderlecht historically remains on a different level, not least by virtue of its number of championships. The former Red Devil, who returned to Anderlecht last year as goalkeeping coach and assistant to Jérémy Taravel, sounded particularly irritated by voices now describing Union as a bigger club than Anderlecht. According to Proto, that view lacks any historical perspective. He cited his own list of honours with the purple-and-white — six league titles and two cups — and compared it with Union's overall palmarès to illustrate how large the gap in tradition and silverware still is, in his view.
