OTHER Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel (39) has decided to end his career. The Danish goalkeeper played for Anderlecht during the 2023-2024 season. Schmeichel was currently playing for Celtic, but due to a shoulder injury, he was expected to be sidelined until at least February 2027.
Schmeichel had big shoes to fill as the son of Manchester United icon Peter Schmeichel, but managed to build a very successful career. He achieved his greatest success with Leicester when they surprisingly won the title in 2016. Schmeichel also played for Manchester City and Nice. He earned 120 caps for the Danish national team.
Fredberg signed Schmeichel just before the transfer deadline expired because Anderlecht had already signed a new goalkeeper, Dupé. Schmeichel got off to a hesitant start but grew into one of the team's key players under Riemer, who remained in contention for the title until the final stages of the Champions League playoffs.
