OTHER Anderlecht will have to do without the support of its fans next season for away match(es) at Union's Joseph Mariën Stadium. The sanction follows numerous incidents that took place after the lost cup final against Union. Anderlecht has also been fined €8,000. Fans launched fireworks and destroyed a number of seats in the stadium.
The federal prosecutor's office had initially sought a higher fine, but Anderlecht pointed to the football association's poor organisation and inadequate checks. Anderlecht also requested footage after the cup final to identify the culprits, and it emerged that the Brussels club itself had taken the initiative to punish those responsible. Also taken into account in the decision was “the historically tense relationship with Union”. At this point, the measure therefore applies to just one match in the “new” competition format. If Anderlecht were to travel to Union in the Croky Cup, the ban would also apply to that game.
