Coosemans praises mentality

INTERVIEWS After a fine 0-1 win at PAOK, Colin Coosemans was a satisfied man. The goalkeeper saw his team hold firm in a particularly difficult away match and above all highlighted Anderlecht's mental resilience. “PAOK is a strong opponent and the atmosphere in this stadium is impressive. So this is an excellent result,” Coosemans said afterwards.

In the keeper's view, the game was mainly about character. “It was a real battle in which everyone had to give absolutely everything. We had to endure difficult spells and spent a lot of time without the ball, but no one gave in. Everyone sacrificed themselves for the team. That is exactly what the coach and his staff keep stressing.”

Coosemans himself played a major part in the win, saving a penalty and making an excellent stop deep into stoppage time. Somewhat strikingly, he even felt that the later intervention was the more difficult one. “That save at the end was technically harder, because the ball took a strange bounce and you never quite knew where it would end up. Of course, the penalty was crucial too. When the rebound still went in, it was frustrating for a moment, but fortunately the goal was eventually disallowed.”

Even so, the goalkeeper is refusing to get carried away. In his view, qualification is still far from secured. “We have won nothing yet. This is a good starting position, but there is still a tough return leg ahead. That said, this performance gives us confidence, because we showed a lot of positive things we can build on.”

Finally, Coosemans emphasized the high level of ambition within the squad. “Everyone wants to make this a successful season. We have three official matches under our belts now, and we can build on that. Attention now shifts to the start of the league season against La Louvière.”
