FLASHBACK After its founding in 1908, Anderlecht grew quickly. Money was raised in the neighborhood to buy balls and jerseys. The purple (mauve) and white colors were inspired by Queen Elisabeth's carriage.
Many players soon made the switch from Union to Anderlecht, which also established a youth team. A location for a football field was chosen in the Scheut district.
After joining the association in the spring of 1909, the moment finally arrived: Anderlecht played its first official match in the 'Third Regional Brabant' division, a provincial league. The match immediately attracted 2,500 fans. The game was lost 1-0 to Merlo. A ticket cost about 10 cents.
The Mauves finished third, but that was considered enough to promote due to good results. Anderlecht thus slowly began its climb toward the top division, which was reached in 1921.
