INTERVIEWS After October last year (also against Antwerp), Theo Leoni was allowed to start with Anderlecht's A-team for the second time yesterday. Together with Jan Vertonghen, he was the standout and his name rolled off the stands. At last, the 23-year-old midfielder seems to be rewarded for his patience. "I have had tough moments," he said.

It was already clear during the preparation that Leoni was making his presence felt. Against Union he was allowed to fill in, against Antwerp he was given a starting place. He thanked with plenty of verbal presence, guts and footballing ability. Leoni directed the midfield. Coach Brian Riemer cannot ignore him in the coming weeks.

For Leoni, a reward for years of hard work and patience. The now 23-year-old Carolo saw how many younger players 'passed him' or looked for other places. Although even his entourage sometimes urged him to launch his career elsewhere, he continued to work for and dream of the big break at Anderlecht.

"Why didn't that opportunity come sooner? I am not the coach and cannot answer that," he told reporters after the game against Antwerp. "Indeed, I had to wait for a long time and had tough moments. In the long run, it becomes difficult to keep working in the shadows."

His patience is greatly appreciated by the Anderlecht crowd. These have a chouchou there and they chanted his name several times during the match. "They know I showed patience and remained loyal to Anderlecht. I feel one hundred per cent purple and white."
