STVV defender Smets in the picture

TRANSFERS Het Laatste Nieuws reports that Anderlecht are interested in Matt Smets. STVV's 20-year-old central defender broke through completely this season. In league and cup combined, he did not miss a minute. He also made it to U21 international.


Smets swapped Genk for STVV in 2018 at the age of 14. He made his debut in the first team in October 2022, and since the end of December 2022 he has been a fixture in the heart of the Jerseys defence.

At the end of January this season, he was about to move to Ghent, but the young Limburger finally pulled the plug on the transfer himself. He wanted to finish the season at STVV. However, there was an agreement at club level. 

Besides Anderlecht, Genk are now said to be interested. Smets still has a two-year contract at STVV. His value is estimated at 5 million euros.
