Anderlecht wins with difficulty, but deservedly so

GAMES Anderlecht deservedly won 1-0 against KAA Gent. The Purple & White had a number of chances tonight, but clearly lacked a finisher. Gent played a weak game, but Anderlecht was unable to take advantage of this until a ball from Stroeykens in the 68th minute deflected off a Gent player and into the goal. Anderlecht is now second in the standings and will travel to OHL on Friday, traditionally a difficult away game for the Purple & White.
Anderlecht was clearly the better team before halftime, but that was mainly because Gent played very poorly from the 20th minute onwards. Anderlecht took it easy without delivering the knockout blow.

Continue reading The Purple & White played too slowly, without much conviction, and failed to capitalize on promising moments (a number of times when Gent lost possession). Stroeykens had a few shots on goal, Huerta just failed to get past Roef, and a deflected cross from Maamar hit the post.
At the other end, Coosemans had to intervene once on a free kick from Ito.
Anderlecht pressed on after the break, but again we only saw a few near-chances. Angulo had a shot and Maamar just couldn't finish. Anderlecht finally took the lead in the 68th minute through Stroeykens, albeit with a dose of luck. The shot was going wide, but it deflected off Paskotsi and past Roef into the goal.
After the 1-0, Gent seemed to wake up and created some danger from set pieces without really creating any big chances. Anderlecht couldn't take advantage of the space that opened up in midfield. In extra time, Anderlecht had two more big chances to decide the game. Verschaeren was set up by Camara, but shot straight at Roef. Moments later, Vazquez intercepted a ball, but his shot was far too weak.
So Anderlecht won again, but deservedly so. We don't want to complain too much based on the result, but against this weak Gent side, you should always be able to score at least three goals.
