Upon his arrival, Ambros immediately got a feel for the team's atmosphere. During training camp, as a newcomer, he had to sing for the team. His rendition of an Akon song earned him, in his own words, more applause than musical talent.
Besides soccer, the 22-year-old Czech has many other interests. He enjoys playing chess on his phone, reads books regularly, and plays the piano. He also used to play tennis, table tennis, and squash, though soccer has always been his greatest passion.
That passion led him to Slavia Prague at a young age. His family even moved with him so he could develop to his full potential. Later, at the age of sixteen, he moved to VfL Wolfsburg, where he made his Bundesliga debut as the youngest Czech player ever. A real breakthrough never materialized there, but in Poland he regained his confidence.
Ambros describes Cristiano Ronaldo as his role model—not so much because of his playing style, but mainly because of his unyielding mentality and professional attitude. He himself dreams of breaking through to the Czech national team after playing in dozens of youth international matches.
Off the field, too, he's gradually starting to feel at home in Belgium. Together with his Polish girlfriend, he's looking for a home in a quiet neighborhood so their two dogs have plenty of space. He also wants to improve his French, a language he prefers to learn through practice.
Before every game, Ambros sticks to a personal ritual. In the locker room, he prays with a cross he received at his baptism. Just before he steps onto the field, he also takes a moment to turn to God. That gives him peace and confidence before kickoff.
