OTHER Jan Vertonghen has announced he will end his career at the end of this season. The decision was driven in part by the injury he suffered this season, which forced him to reconsider his future in football. Vertonghen realized that it was no longer possible for him to consistently perform at a high level, which led to his decision to quit. “In that respect, the decision was not difficult to make,” he echoed.

“Still, I don't regret my decision to stay with RSC Anderlecht for an extra season after the EC. I feel good here and hope to have some more great moments during the Champion's Playoffs and cup final,” he continued.

Vertonghen received injections in the past to still be able to play, but decided against further medical interventions this time around as previous treatments had not proven effective. “I feel relieved now that the decision has been announced. But I still have ambitions before I effectively stop,” referring, among other things, to the cup final.

“I even thought of quitting earlier because I am experiencing too much pain. The club management was aware of this. But playing without commitment, that won't happen. I know I probably won't play every game in the playoffs, but when I play I will go for it 100 percent,” he said.

Finally, Vertonghen made it clear that he has no plans to become a coach, but rather wants to enjoy time with his family after his retirement from professional soccer.
