When an assistant becomes an opponent: Taravel challenges Leko

OTHER At Anderlecht, Jérémy Taravel's story is one nobody saw coming. The former defender arrived in Brussels last summer to assist Besnik Hasi, but when the coaching staff left he was unexpectedly promoted to interim head coach. A few weeks later he already finds himself up against Ivan Leko, his former mentor. Taravel had not originally planned to leave Standard, where he held an open?ended contract.


Poor communication from the new management in Liège ultimately pushed him towards Anderlecht, a sporting project that also fitted better with family life in Brussels. What started as a cautious step has turned into a singular opportunity. At Standard, Taravel was personally recruited by Leko, who saw in him an assistant coach with fresh ideas, discipline and ambition. He was closely involved in tactical meetings and stood out for his sense of balance between defence and attack.

According to José Jeunechamps, who worked with him at Sclessin, he combines a hunger to learn with natural leadership. Since Taravel took over, Anderlecht have rediscovered stability and efficiency. They reached the cup final, took seven points from nine in the league and scored thirteen goals in three matches. The team looks liberated and confident again.

His approach — defensive organisation paired with attacking freedom — seems to fit a squad that needed clarity. Thorgan Hazard is the clearest example. Jeunechamps believes that Hazard's revival is no accident: Taravel knows how to reach a dressing room and to steer experienced players back on course.
