OTHER After the heavy 5-1 defeat to Union Saint-Gilloise, RSC Anderlecht came in for fierce criticism on the HLN Football podcast. Analysts Frank Boeckx and Toby Alderweireld did not spare the purple-and-white and pointed to structural problems within the club. At the same time, Boeckx put forward a notable name as a possible new coach: Wouter Vrancken. Boeckx suggested the heavy loss may even have clarified matters for sporting director Antoine Sibierski.

He believes the Frenchman probably realises now more than ever how extensive the clear-out of the squad must be. "This shows there are a lot of players who shouldn't just be allowed to leave, but actually must leave," he said sharply. According to him, Anderlecht will have to dig deep to become competitive again. Boeckx was particularly critical of the team's mentality. He was irritated that players seem to react only when there is extra motivation, such as a cup final or backing a coach. In matches without high stakes he saw, in his words, too little fighting spirit and commitment — behaviour he called "unworthy of Anderlecht."

Alderweireld was also especially tough on the record champions. He pointed out that the problems have been building up for years and are not just down to the players. According to the former Red Devil, Anderlecht lacks structure and vision. Time and again different people are asked to try to save the club without anything fundamental changing. One of Sibierski's main dossiers now will be the search for a new head coach. Boeckx sees Vrancken as an interesting candidate, pointing to the football Sint-Truidense VV has produced this season.

He believes Vrancken has shown he can deliver tidy, solid football even with a limited squad. Alderweireld also understands why Vrancken could be a logical choice. He argued that the pressure at Anderlecht today is less than it once was because expectations have fallen. "The smallest positive result will quickly be hailed as a success," he concluded.
