Despite the difficult period, Ludwig Augustinsson remains optimistic about Anderlecht's future. The 32-year-old Swedish left back, who will face Red Bull Salzburg with the Purple & White tomorrow, is convinced that the team can still achieve great things. “We're on the right track and will surprise a lot of people.”
Augustinsson is now in his fourth season with Anderlecht and has come to understand just how intense the pressure can be at the Brussels club. “Here, absolutely everything is scrutinized,” he says. “Even the smallest detail can turn into a big story. As a player, you have to try not to pay too much attention to that. After a win, we're not suddenly the best team in the league, just as we're not immediately the worst after a loss.”
The Swede refers to a well-known quote by Vincent Kompany: “Trust the process.” “I believe we're on the right track. We can still achieve great things this season. We'll undoubtedly surprise a lot of people. Against Westerlo, we've already shown the right response.”
Competition keeps everyone on their toes
Augustinsson is a mainstay in the league, but in the Europa League he's had to make way for Oleg Reabciuk on several occasions. The Moldovan competitor was preferred in matches against Dinamo Zagreb and Jagiellonia Bialystok, among others.
The Swede doesn't necessarily see that as a problem. When the topic of his age comes up, he responds with a wink: “Are you saying I'm old?” He then clarifies his situation. “Of course, every player wants to play as many games as possible, but it's not ideal to be on the field for ninety minutes every three days. Besides, we have a deep roster, and the coach wants to make use of it. That seems logical to me.”
