OTHER A farce like you can only find in Belgium. That's how we describe the VAR intervention during Zulte Waregem - Anderlecht, in which the referee disallowed an Anderlecht goal ... only to give Anderlecht a penalty.

Deep in the first half, Silva is nicely played free on the wing. The Portuguese looks for the back line in the sixteen-meter area and brings the ball in front of goal where N'Diaye misses. However, Derijck goes full on Silva's shin at the cross. Referee Laforge does not notice the foul and the game continues.

A good minute later; the game has not stopped by then; Silva scores on a cross from Murillo. The VAR intervenes, however, for the preceding phase with Derijck. The conclusion, after several minutes of waiting, is remarkable:

  • Anderlecht's goal is disallowed.
  • Derijck gets yellow instead of red.
  • Anderlecht gets a penalty, which fortunately is kicked in by Silva.
In any case, we are very curious about Frank Debleeckere's explanation of this phase, which is probably going around the world smoothly by now.

A little later, Laforge again is wrong. He hands out direct red to Debast, who simply shields the ball. Fortunately enough, the VAR does intervene correctly and Debast is allowed to stay on the pitch....

Update afterwards (at halftime): the initial goal by Silva was apparently disallowed for (questionable) positional offside by Arnstad, thus reverting to the previous phase (without communicating this then).
