OTHER Paul Van Himst will not be at Lotto Park on Saturday evening for Anderlecht against Westerlo. That means the 83-year-old purple-and-white legend will miss his grandson Amando Lapage's return to his former club. “I already told him I won't be going,” Van Himst says. He is expecting an emotional evening, because choosing between Anderlecht and his grandson is not easy.

“I'd rather it ended in a draw.” Lapage left Anderlecht for Westerlo at the start of 2025 after making four appearances for the first team. His grandfather would have preferred to see him break through at the Brussels club. “I would have wanted nothing more than for him to stay at Anderlecht. Playing for the first team was his dream.” According to Van Himst, Lapage might have been given more opportunities if he had stayed. Even so, he is pleased that his grandson is getting minutes at Westerlo. “It's a young team at a family club. I'm happy that he is satisfied there and that he's getting to play.”

The club legend is also concerned about Anderlecht's current situation. He believes the club needs to keep talented players such as Nathan De Cat on board longer in order to build a strong side. At the same time, he realises that financial considerations often have the final say. Van Himst still follows his beloved club closely, but he knows there is little he can do to change things. He regularly talks about the problems at the purple-and-white club with cycling legend Eddy Merckx. “But we can't change anything about it.”
