Anderlecht eliminates Lierse after long penalty kick series

GAMES The cup match between Lierse and Anderlecht failed to produce a winner after ninety minutes. Even the extensions were a measure of nothing, although the home team still had the best chances. Especially De Schrijver showed himself in the extra half hour with a dangerous header and a shot. Penalty kicks had to decide this sad spectacle and lady luck was in Anderlecht's favor (after a miserable series).


A very young Anderlecht tried to get through from the start. Ait El Hadj had the first big chance, but missed with home goalie De Smet. A bit later, Silva was awarded an unjustified penalty: the ball flew beautifully into the top right corner. Although Raemaekers played the ball and not Amuzu. A mistake by the ref, but there was no VAR.

Anderlecht could not enjoy the lead for long. Three minutes later, Tabekou took advantage of an oversight by Murillo to extend a cross into goal: 1-1. After that goal, the game was at a standstill for a while, giving us six minutes of extra time. In it, Stroeykens scored on a pass from Silva. Anderlecht went into the break with a lead.

After the break, both teams showed that they are at their best on the soccer pitch. Gradually an enthusiastic Lierse took the upper hand and that resulted in the equalizer ten minutes before time. Vekemans reacted alertly to a deep ball and outsmarted N'Diaye and Verbruggen. On to extensions, then.

Hardly anything happened in the first extension, other than a completely free header chance for De Schrijver. However, he grazed the ball with his head, forgetting to pinch Anderlecht to death. Sadiki and Lissens came on to replace Murillo and Debast at the beginning of the second extension, but it was still Guillaume De Schrijver who claimed a leading role again: his blast, however, was straight at goalkeeper Verbruggen. After 113 minutes, Silva still had an answer to the home team's violence, but the angle was too sharp. Leoni tried again from distance shortly before time, but without danger. Anderlecht did very little in the extra half hour and dragged themselves to penalties. Anderlecht managed to wipe away some of their embarrassment, even though it cost them 10 penalties. Goalkeeper Verbruggen scored the decisive one.
