Jan Vertonghen has resumed running training, but his return is not for immediately. After three months of absence due to tendinitis, it is hoped the Anderlecht captain will be back on the pitch before the end of the year.
Tendinopathy is a long-term process where overuse of the tendons, such as the Achilles tendon, leads to pain. There is no quick fix for this problem, as a proper exercise programme only takes effect after 12 weeks.
Vertonghen is working on his recovery at Move to Cure in Antwerp and with Anderlecht's medical staff. He is currently unable to walk pain-free and will not move to the next phase until he does. An operation is out of the question at the moment as it would mean the end of his career. Anderlecht will respect Vertonghen's recovery process and give him the time he needs. During the winter transfer window, the club is considering recruiting an additional central defender.
