INTERVIEWS Jérémy Taravel's chapter as Anderlecht's head coach is over. Whether the Frenchman will keep a role within the staff of a new coach is for now uncertain. After three intense months in charge, he is looking back on that period in detail for the first time. “I learned a huge amount in a short time about managing a group, handling pressure and leading a staff,” Taravel says.
“We reached three of our four targets: Play-off 1, European football and the cup final. Only winning that cup we did not manage.” According to Taravel, Anderlecht mainly suffered from a lack of leadership and mentality in the squad. That is why he brought Mats Rits back into the group. “You need players who pull others through difficult moments.”
The coach did note positive progress in several players, including Nathan Saliba, Nathan De Cat and Ali Maamar. He himself stuck to his familiar 4-2-3-1 system. He describes the heavy 5-1 defeat to Union on the final matchday as “unacceptable.” “After a tough season and the lost cup final it was hard to keep everyone fully sharp.” There is still no clarity about his future. Anderlecht may wish to keep him on as an assistant, but Taravel does not rule out taking on a new challenge as head coach.
