Anderlecht coach Ariel Jacobs has pointed to a one minute spell in the first half as the root of his side’s problems in Wednesday evening’s 5-1 humiliation at the hands of Olympique Lyonnais.
Jacobs did admit that the French side showed how to play a Champions League knockout match.
Jacobs has pointed to these seconds as being vital in the match. “The second goal will generate discussion,” he noted to the AFP. “I think I saw a clear foul on Suarez, which would given us a penalty, instead of a penalty going against us and to Lyon, which closed the match.
“From there, there was a sort of collective stampede and two [more] goals were conceded.”
Despite his complaints, Jacobs did concede Lyon were value for their victory. “Lyon deserved their victory,” he said. “We received a lesson in speed, maturity and collective domination.”
Due to the 5-1 result, the second leg in Stade Constant Vanden Stock next week will require an unprecedented comeback for the Belgians for Champions League football to be possible
