FLASHBACK On December 30, 1973, the round of 16 of the Belgian Cup was scheduled. Anderlecht played at home against Beerschot. The Brussels' side fielded a strong lineup, but the match ended 0-0 after extra time.
Anderlecht lined up with Jan Ruiter, Hugo Broos, Jean Dockx, Jos Volders, Gilbert Van Binst, Jan Verheyen, André De Nul, Inge Ejderstedt, François Van der Elst, Attila Ladinszky, and Paul Van Himst.
Beerschot had some less well-known names, but Juan Lozano and Walter Meeuws stood out.
Beerschot managed to hold Anderlecht to a goalless draw, and at that time, no penalty shootouts were held; instead, a replay was scheduled.
This replay took place at Beerschot's ground on January 8, 1974. For that match, Anderlecht added extra quality with Coeck and Rensenbrink. Attila Ladinszky scored the only goal for Anderlecht, but the Mauves also conceded four goals: two from Meeuws and two from Nicolaes.
Beerschot was eliminated in the next round by Antwerp. Waregem eventually won the cup. Anderlecht, however, went on to become champions later that year, finishing two points ahead of Antwerp. Anderlecht's Hungarian striker Attila Ladinszky became the top scorer with 22 goals. He had joined that year from Feyenoord and would leave again in 1975 for Betis. Ladinszky passed away in 2020 due to heart failure.
