FLASHBACK Jankovic was a midfielder who made his debut at Maribor but became best known at Red Star Belgrade. In mid-1987, the talented player moved to Real Madrid, where he became a regular starter and won two league titles. It was all the more remarkable that Jankovic then came to Anderlecht in 1988 and spent much of his first season on the bench.
In his second season, he became a regular starter.
At Anderlecht, he won a cup. However, he did not win a league title, as the Brussels team finished second twice during the seasons Jankovic was active in the capital. He did play in a European Cup Winners' Cup final, but the purple and white lost that match. In 1990, he returned to Yugoslavia, where he played for one more year. As a young thirty-something, he ended his career.
Notable
Jankovic is mainly remembered for his transfer as a regular starter from Real Madrid to Anderlecht. In the end, he actually played more matches for Real Madrid than for Anderlecht (38 vs. 36).
Jankovic also earned 12 caps for Yugoslavia, and here too something special stands out: he made his debut against Brazil and also ended his international career against Brazil. In his debut match, he scored his only international goal.
After his playing career, he became a coach, and there is an interesting detail here as well: among others, he coached the football minnows Tonga.
