OTHER Should Thorgan Hazard start for Anderlecht in the cup final? Eight experts—former coaches, ex-players and analysts—give their verdict. Francky Dury is pro-Hazard without hesitation. It's a final, Hazard is fresh and motivated, and Dury believes his experience and figures should count for more than Degreef or Bertaccini.
Olivier Deschacht sees a real dilemma. He was very impressed by the Bertaccini–Cvetkovic–Verschaeren trio against Gent. For him Hazard and Verschaeren balance each other; he would start Verschaeren and bring Hazard on as a joker after about an hour. Paul Van Himst gives a slight edge to Hazard. He acknowledges Verschaeren's strong display but questions his consistency, and therefore leans on Hazard's experience in big matches.

Continue reading Walter Baseggio says yes, but not as a number 9. Hazard shouldn't play as a centre-forward—he lacks the necessary strength and pace. He should support Cvetkovic in a free role where his technique can shine. Philippe Albert calls him “indispensable.” Albert sees Hazard as Anderlecht's creator for this final and believes he must be given full freedom, without heavy defensive duties. Davy De Fauw describes him as the man for big moments. Even at 80 percent Hazard still matters; in major games he can outdo himself and a single spark can decide it.
Aad de Mos agrees, but stresses the need for careful mental management. Anderlecht should try to surprise Union; the coach must test Hazard mentally, show appreciation and give him responsibility—he could then contribute 45–60 minutes. Johan Boskamp says yes, because he's the only experienced player. Hazard may be less explosive and a touch heavier, but he remains a joy to watch, is the club's top scorer and could produce one last flare-up before he leaves. Anderlecht lacks experience, so he should play.
