FLASHBACK To celebrate the first artificial lighting, a friendly match was organised against the mighty Racing Club de Buenos Aires. 30,000 fans enjoyed the first Belgian match played under floodlights. It's March 6 1954 and Anderlecht secured a smooth 3-2 victory against the side that was, at the time, the best club in the world.

After just 4 minutes, Marcel De Corte already slotted home the 1-0. The Argentinians had barely recovered when the second blow arrived through Polyte van den Bosch. In the 21st minute, De Corte made it 3-0 following a third assist by Jef Mermans. When Anderlecht took their foot off the gas, the Argentinians found their way into the game: Simes and Pizzuti narrowed the gap to 3-2 in the 50th and 64th minutes, but the Mauves did not let it get any further.

When Anderlecht beat them 3-2 in 1954, the Purple & White were truly playing against a global powerhouse. Although their international heyday (Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup) came in 1967, Racing was already an absolute top-tier club in the 1950s, having just secured a "tricampeonato" (three consecutive titles: '49, '50, '51) in the competitive Argentine league. The club slumped in the 1970s but experienced a resurgence starting in the 1980s. Currently, the club is officially named Racing Club de Avellaneda, but it is popularly known as Racing Club or simply Racing.
