
INTERVIEWS Guillaume Gillet says he still has occasional contact with the Portuguese coach. “Not that long ago, he was still in the running to become head coach of Nantes. We spoke about that at the time. It ultimately did not lead to an agreement, but there were talks.” According to Gillet, Bruno already stood out back then as an assistant coach because of his active role on the training pitch.
“He was constantly involved with the players and did not limit himself to analysis behind a desk. During training sessions, he did a lot of coaching and was hugely engaged. So it did not surprise me when he later got the chance to become head coach of Porto.” At the Portuguese top club, Bruno succeeded his mentor Sergio Conceição, with whom he had worked for more than ten years. That long partnership, Gillet says, clearly left its mark. “He is an energetic personality who keeps motivating players. He was also heavily involved in tactical preparation. Although Conceição was the one in charge, Vitor knew every detail of the plan and was able to convey that clearly to the group.”
