INTERVIEWS Anthony Vanden Borre doesn't beat around the bush: the current state of “his” Anderlecht pains him. Although the former fan favorite now works quietly at La Louvière, he still closely follows developments at Lotto Park. In an interview with HUMO, he shares his thoughts on the ongoing crisis at the purple and white club.
His dissatisfaction began recently in the stands during the tribute to youth coach René Peeters. According to Vanden Borre, the turnout of former players was disappointing. “Someone who has meant so much to the training program in Neerpede deserves a full house,” he says. For him, it is symptomatic of the current distant culture within the club.
From a sporting perspective, Vanden Borre sees one fundamental problem in particular: a lack of clear identity. In that sense, he considers it pointless to resort to all kinds of tricks when the foundations are not solid enough. He draws a parallel with the Vincent Kompany era, a project that he believes failed in part due to an unclear organizational structure.
He also questions the hypothetical return of Romelu Lukaku and/or Youri Tielemans: “Of course we recognize their quality, but would they be effective in this chaos?”
